iCloud email on OSX Mail App - Input requested

For those of you who use iCloud mail on OSX's mail app, I wanted to ask if you notice any decrease in the app's performance if you have a large number of emails or a lengthy history of old emails within the app?

I don't really know what a lot of email is, 1000 messages could seem like a lot to one user, others might consider 100,000 not many.

Personally I have about 47,000 emails in the archive folder as well as about 10 folders. I notice zero slow down in the app. Search is responsive as well.
