Hi - hope I'm right in posting here.

I own a rather ancient but generally trustworthy macbook pro 2006 (MA610LL)

My issue is with charging the newish battery (12 months old or so)

Initially it charged fine then one day mac wouldn't turn on. And no light glowing on the magsafe plug.

Quick search led me to smc reset. I've done two different variations of this with different results.

1) Unplugged power lead, held power button for 10 seconds replugged power lead whilst still holding power button, released then turn on as usual. Lo and behold it fires up. BUT fan is running constantly and there is an X through battery icon, it's not charging, still no light on magsafe.....

2) Removed battery, removed power lead, held power button for 10 seconds, release, insert battery, power etc. This time I have a green light but macbook won't power up. Not a dicky bird.

At this point I repeat number 1 so I can register with macrumors and post this >_<

Anyone able to shed any light on this? I did read one thing about possibly replacing the magsafe dc board..... but I start to feel a little overwhelmed at this point.... any help would be gratefully received....

At 9 years old it is as you say ancient. Was the new battery an apple replacement or something dodgy off ebay?? Could just be a dead battery.

Many macbooks won't run without the battery and others will only run badly (throttling CPU fans at full speed yada yada yada).

To be honest at that age it really isn't worth putting any money into it.
