Hi there,

Gout troubles with my external drives. Lacie d2 USB 3 Thunderbolt series ( each 3 Tb) on my Imac 27" medio 2011. Yosemite is completely up to date. Until a few days ago everything was working just fine. ( I use the thunderbolt connection ) But then ... as always I dragged my external drives to trash ( to switch them off for saving electricity ;-) )... I switched them off ... KERNEL PANIC. If drives are on they work perfectly. When I shut them off... kernel panic. Yesterday a friend came by with his brand-new Macbook Pro and so we attached the drives to his computer. Guess what? Same problem. How do I solve this? Luckily I've got a backup on my Time Capsule of all my data but the Time Capsule is 2 Tb large and I'm not so far away of more data.
Thanx for thinking about it. Hope I can solve this.

OS X is NOT like Windows! OS X is based on NeXTSTEP which is based on BSD Unix. So externals have to be mounted to the desktop of a user so you have to dismount the drive before disconnecting it or powering it off. You can either drag the drive to the Trash Can or highlight the drive and press the keyboard keys command button+e to eject the highlighted drive.

OS X will always warn you to do the drive ejection correctly if you don't eject the drive first.

AAAAgh,windows. Do you wan't me to drop dead? Imac, Time Capsule, 3 iPhones, iPad. 1 windows laptop èç!àç!))))Ouch. They don't even know how to count the version names, guess how that system works !! Needs maintenance every week. Only used by our dissabled daughter for Youtube and playing DVD. :( Always, sh.. )

To the point : Ofcourse you're right. I wrote it down in my first post, third line. Also posted it in apple forum : somebody suggests I should contact Lacie. I did it a few hours ago. But it's very strange that the two drives both at the same time begon to give troubles. They're both bought in september 2013 and are in warranty till 2016 but something tells me ( I hope not ) that, since the last update of osx, the problems started. (I don't turn the computer much off, so I can't say it for sure) Compatibilityproblem?????

OP:

You're not the only one with this problem.

Over at macintouch.com there seems to be others reporting the same situation.

I suggest you browse the Yosemite discussion there, to see what others are saying...
