13" rMBP + LG 31MU97-B

this LG 31MU97-B has 4096 x 2160.

Can 13" rMBP can have 50HZ on 4096 x 2160?????????

I saw the real thing. This monitor is awesome.....However, If I can't get 50z on 4096 x 2160....what's the point of buying, right???

Anyone knows?????

Looks like Dell has another width/height ratio, because it has 3840 x 2160.

1) 51Hz works perfectly on OS X Mavericks, but not perfect on Yosemite. I downgraded to Mavericks because of Wi-Fi issues, but also found that P2415Q sometimes flickering for left Notification view and for heavy sites with visual effects. So I'm happy on Mavericks for many reasons - stable wi-fi, stable 4K monitor and fast computer.

Also SwitchResX doesn't work stable on Yosemite - sometimes it cannot switch to 51Hz mode (black screen), some time proper scaling doesn't work... I don't have such problems with Mavericks

Which version of SwitchResX are you using? The latest version is now 4.5.0 and they say it should be compatible with Yosemite. But the reality might be different.

Has anybody else problems with the P2415Q monitor under Yosemite? I would like to get the same monitor but it must be sure work with Yosemite.

I"ve just ordered Dell P2415Q after reading of your post and today i've got it - it works perfectly with these settings, 4k picture quality is amazing with 51Hz. Just like my retina 13" but much bigger.

Thanks!

Do you use Yosimite? And are you experiencing any problems?

Also, here's some further support for the refresh rate I'm getting on this machine if this makes you feel more comfortable!

Hi jonisign

Have the same Samsung display UD590 and I've been looking very actively how to may this display work in 3840X2160 in 52Hz. You are the only one that was to prove that it is possible doing it with a 13 MBP.

My machine is a 13 MBP mid 2014 i7 Intel Iris 1536 MB. I'm stuck right now doing 3840X2160 in 30Hz via HDMI. I bought all the cable to try different way I have the miniDP and the MiniDP adaptor as well. But I can figure out the switch rez part. I tried as well Picture By Picture mode which was not successful for me.

Would you be kind enough to help me out with couple of questions:

-Which cable you are using to achieve the 3840X2160 in 52Hz?
-What are the steps in switch rez to achieve the 3840X2160 in 52Hz?
-Last what are the setting in in switch rez that allow the 3840X2160 in 52Hz?

jonisign, thank you very much for your help in this long quest of my search to achieve this goal.

Cheers,

It's working ok.
I get 3840 x 2160 @ 52HZ.

I just got LG LG 31MU97-B. Although I am not maximizing its capability that is 4096 X 2160........., I am ok with 3840 x 2160 @ 52 HZ.

Hey guys, thanks so much for all the helpful posts! I started freaking out when I saw the blurry text immediately after plugging in my Dell P2715Q into my late 2013 13" retina MacBook Pro. But I finally found this thread, got SwitchResX, set the refresh rate to 52hz and got it working!

Sorry for the late reply, a few things

- 52 Hz, 4K is ONLY possible over Thunderbolt 2/Displayport, not HDMI
- I'm using this cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C7RJQPY
- To achieve 52 Hz, you need to set a custom resolution with the settings in the attached file in switchesX. Make sure that you're getting a 450 MHz pixel clock. Input the settings and restart!

Hello,

how about the new Macbook Pro 13 Inch Retina (2015) which was presented by Apple some hours ago ?
It says it has an IRIS 6100 Graphics card - does this one support 60 Hz "out of the box" with 3840x2160 pixels ?
In the technical data it says it does support that resolution, but it doesn´t say anything about the frequency, except with HDMI, where it is 30 Hz, but I would like to know if it supports the 60 Hz at Thunderbolt port ?

Any ideas / information would be appreciated.

Best regards,
Daniel

I too would like to know this. In this article it says:

The 2013 Retina MacBook Pros included Thunderbolt 2 and DisplayPort 1.2, but GPU limitations meant the 13-inch model could only drive a 4K panel at 30Hz. The new Broadwell GPUs support 4K output at 60Hz over DisplayPort.

Can somebody confirm?

That's correct, Intel 5th gen CPUs with integrated GPU support 4k at 60Hz

How to comply with this then?

View Specs:

http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro

Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 3840 by 2160 pixels on up to two external displays, both at millions of colors

HDMI video output

Support for 1080p resolution at up to 60Hz
Support for 3840-by-2160 resolution at 30Hz
Support for 4096-by-2160 resolution at 24Hz

The answer is simple, to get 60hz on 4k you need to use the displayport. HDMI at the moment only does 30hz

Of course HiDPI is the way To go ! Full res is not usable. Good idea I will give it a try with SwitchResX on my 15".

I did not now it was SST on U28d590d, I was sure it has To be MST to support 60Hz 2160p...

Anyway, as you can see I do plan To use it with u28d590d

Are you serious! That stand for your MacBook is AWESOME. Where'd you get it?

I have a BookArc, but I REALLY want the stand you have...:)

Thanks for that, another burning question if I may - What other devices are able to output 4k @ 60 beside Mac Pro and iMac?

Not sure all the iMacs can output at 60hz, not the base version with Intel HD5000 graphics. MacBook Pro 15 also can. And pretty sure the new Mac Air with HD 6000. Basically pretty much everything but the Mac Mini. Which is the one I got :( I am running a 4k at 30hz and to be honest I can very hardly tell the difference (I use it for photo editing and office).

I have MacBook Air mid 2012 with HD4000 and of course I am out of anything but 1080p. Now I need desperately something that can output 4K @ 60 hz since I have Sony 4K and Denon receiver 4K both with up-scaling capability.

Apple has updated this page and I might be partially wrong
https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT202856

New Air is listed as supporting 4k BUT not listed under MST so no 60hz?

I just picked up a 2015 rMBP. I wanted to confirm something:

If I get a 4k monitor, I will just need a 4k thunderbolt -> mini displayport to run 4k at 60hz, correct?

You'd be looking for a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort 1.2 cable. Something like this. That's a pretty good price actually, I might pick one up for my rMBP currently waiting to be shipped :)

Thanks so much! I didn't realize that Mini Displayport cables can go into the thunderbolt port. Lol
