Early symptom of gpu failure? This happens on boot anytime I'm driving an external display.

Take it to Apple and have them repair it. Looks GPU to me.

I've reformatted and ran all updates. I installed nothing and it still does it. Any other potential variables I should consider?

I want my complaint to be iron clad when I hit the genius bar tonight.

In the middle of several books.

Not that i can think of.

Show them the video if they say anything. Take a USB installer with you if you can. That way, if they say try reinstalling it, you can do that in house and show them that it is still acting up. If it is the GPU, they will repair your Mac for free. They just started the free GPU repair on your model MBP.

Turns out it's "normal". I wouldn't have accepted that answer but we tested another macbook there and it did something similar when booting.
