Isn't it strange that this happened without moving, shaking or in any way using the MBP? How can the trackpad just "jump out"?

Im afraid it is a little over my head to tear it apart to reinsert it.

My MB started rocking on the table one day. Turned out to be that the battery had swollen. I wonder if a swollen battery could cause the trackpad to push up? Might be something easy to check.

That looks like the result of a swollen battery to me. Was it left plugged into power while you were away?

As others have indicated, an elevated trackpad is usually the result of a swollen battery.

I went to a shop that could take a look at it and they said it was a swollen battery.

It looks crazy now:

It is quite expensive to have the battery and trackpad replaced :(

Could the battery do more damage to the mac if I wait a little to have it changed?

Best case? It'll burst. Worst case? It'll catch fire.

Not really trying to scare you, that's the reality of the situation.

I was told it costs 1800 danish kroner to fix it = 265 USD

Im not sure if it worth spending so much on a 13 MBP from 2010 though I have upgraded it with a SSD....

That is a decision you need to make. It maybe cheaper if you do the work yourself as battery and trackpad replacements are not very difficult on the unibody models.
