Use of Traditional USB Hubs with MacBook?

I'm looking for an inexpensive way to expand the ports on the new MacBook. Is it possible as a short-term fix to simply purchase a USB-C to USB adapter and then plug the USB end into an inexpensive regular USB hub that offers ethernet and more USB ports? Will all of them have full functionality?
