I just picked up an old Mac Pro 1,1 for its video card. My buddy has the same old 1,1 Mac Pro. I told him I'd give him some ram if it makes sense.

I have 8 x 2gb of RAM

He has 4 x 512 mb and 2 x 2gb

Would it make sense for me to give him 8 gb of RAM (4 x 2gb) with his setup? He would go to 12gb or 13gb, and I would go to 8gb (which is fine with me). Would this give a significant boost in his machine's performance?

Getting rid of the 512MB FBDIMMs is an excellent idea!
They add heat, use about 10W each and surprised they work after 8.5 yrs or so.

Amazon has Apple FBDIMMs of 667MHz for $23 2x2GB.

Using 4 or 8 DIMMs are better - the "extra" 2GB he should just forget, buy some if needed.

iPhoto, iTunes and general use probably will help. Of course the best thing that can be done is 128GB EVO 850 SSD $65-69 (+ adapter $15) on Amazon.

May as well let them pick up $46 worth of memory while at it?
