Here, I have a problem I'd want help in tracing a folder.

I shutdown my iMac on Saturday evening and left for home for the weekend. today on booting, there is a crucial folder I can't see since it contained files I was using on my windows based PC.

I panicked thinking I had moved it to trash and cleared trash, but I doubt that was the case, since I emptied trash in the afternoon of the same day, and continued using files from the folder in the evening before heading home.

to add some twist to this, when I search for contents that are/were in that folder under spotlight, I can access them. But I can't trace the particular folder.

Any one who has hints on how I can trace/recover the folder?

Regards.

Search in spotlight
Select one of the files (don't open)
Hold CMD to see file path

I have done so, but nothing resulting. Mind you, I am using a windows based keyboard. I clicked on the 'windows logo key/start up key', but nothing.

I clicked on a music file, opened it on itunes and checked clicked on 'open in finder', it was present only in the iTunes folder.

When you open a file in iTunes, it automatically copies it to the iTunes library by default. That's normal.

Ok, try this:

Open a Finder window
Press CMD + Shift + C
Now search for a file
When it finds it, simply right-click > get info to find the path

This is a screenshot from the logs in console indicating that the files are not present.

Hmm. But you see non-music files in spotlight?

Unfortunately, nope.

Also, may you show me how to upload an image?
I have tried one, and the link to the image on desktop isn't showing.

A file on your computer obviously won't show here unless you upload it. When you post, under Additional Options > Attach Files click "Manage Attachments". From there you can choose the file and click "Upload".

Just some thoughts, may help, maybe not.

You wrote above:

It's the FILES that are important to "reach", NOT the folder they were in.

You say you can still open some of the files, is this correct?

Can you open some of them?
Can you open all of those that were important to you?

Try this.
You will have to do this ONE FILE AT A TIME.
You will have to repeat the process for each file.

Create a NEW folder on your desktop, in plain sight.

Open the first file.
Can you open it?
Can you see the content?

Now -- choose "save as" from the file menu.
You want to "re-save" the file to the NEW folder on your desktop.

Does this work for you?

If it works for the first file, try another file.
If this works, repeat, again, and again.

When done, you should have a new folder with some (or all) of the "lost content".
Granted, you may not get everything back, but with a little work, you can get SOME of it back.

How does this work for you?
