While I agree with you wholeheartedly, let's not sell Majel Barrett short..

While the actual TOS series was before my time, I don't recall a female first officer in any branch of the military at that time; yet there she was.

Man, I haven't though about Yeoman Rand in at least forty years. As a child I had a real boy-crush on her. She had a certain sadness about her and seemed particularly vulnerable, and it struck a prepubescent chord in me. I didn't know she was an alcoholic (I didn't know anything about her until tonight) and now I believe she was channeling her real-life problems into her ST role. I think that is a sign of true talent. Anyway, R.I.P.
