Just wanted to let any current or aspiring turntablists/dj's within the Mac community know that the best digital music [AND VIDEO!] mixing software [which also supports regular turntables, cd decks, karaoke files and can be used as a standalone mixer right off of your computer] I've seen and tried has just been confirmed for Mac!

That's right, you can mix using ALL standard dj equipment [turntables & needles, or cd decks, and any mixer going out to any amp & speaker set-up] and only a couple of "time coded" records and/or cd's. And you're not just limited to music files, but you can mix the music video for the song that would [obviously] also play the song. If you "scratch" the music video the audio AND the video BOTH scratch simultaneously.

I've been spinning traditionally since 1987, and I've owned Stanton/Native Instruments' Final Scratch since '03, and have used Serato ScratchLive many times as well. Virtual DJ is going to kick both of their butts. Period.

A new digital dj product is due out in July by major dj equipment manufacturer Numark, called "Virtual Vinyl". The software being used in that product IS a SCALED DOWN version of Virtual DJ 4 that focuses ONLY on dj'ing, while the full version of Virtual DJ 4 has more features and supports more hardware.

PLUS, the software interface is skinnable, so even though the default interface looks very tacky IMO [very microsoft windowsy], no matter! Just download other skins from their site that other users have created or download their SDK and make your own!

Yes, you need windows at the moment. The Mac version is said to be being released at the end of January or beginning of February.

Ofcourses there are others like MegSeg and DJ-1800. The fact that it took "Virtual DJ" SO LONG to come to the Mac platform doesn't sit well with me considering all the fine software that is presently available and have been over the years.

BELIEVE ME, I felt the same way!

NO ONE has gotten flamed more than me on those forums for being so vocal about VDJ & Virtual Vinyl NEEDING a Mac version [it's not an option, it's a necessity] to have a CHANCE IN HELL to penetrate the PROFESSIONAL U.S. radio, club, battle/showcase, & mobile turntablist/dj market which is COMPLETELY dominated by SSL and to a lesser extent, Traktor/Final Scratch, but both on Macs! I'm a Traktor/Final Scratch owner, as well as a traditional analog record user myself. I've never been an SSL owner, but I've used it many times.

However, among other reasons, one good reason to be "excited" about a Mac version of VDJ and Numark's soon to be released "Virtual Vinyl" http://www.pssl.com/bitemdetail.tpl...06102419581449~disp_IMG~Y~catgroup~[catGroup] is that it does something major that NONE of the competition does, MUSIC VIDEO MIXING USING RECORDS [timecode vinyl/TCV's].

Look, I know VDJ currently is NOT as good as SSL in term's of timecode vinyl response and the TCV's themselves are, let's just say "less than good" for serious scratching, quick/trick mixing, beat juggling, etc. I'd say both are only between 50-60% there for REAL turntablist / dj needs. Not for long though.

The word around the Atomix/VDJ forums is that VDJ and Numark's new "Virtual Vinyl" for Mac digital dj hardware & software solution which will be using VDJ as it's interface and is due for release in about a month [late January/early February], will be up to par with SSL, or at least a LOT closer. It may even integrate with SSL in places where SSL is already being used by default, which we know is a LOT.

I won't, nor will my dj partners and friends, switch to VDJ or VV for audio mixing until it's at least as good as SSL in that area, but the video mixing is pretty damn cool though. I keep telling them on the VDJ forums that ONLY after their products are as good as SSL audio-wise will their extra features, such as video mixing, karaoke support, multi midi device controller support [VDJ, not VV], etc., really be worth taking a look at and then be a serious alternative to the competition.

But again, music video mixing using records [timecode vinyl's/TCV's] IS pretty cool though.

I've been using my VDJ set-up alongside my dj partners' SSL set-up [2x4] for the past couple of months, and while they think the video thing is cool, they don't care about VDJ at the moment because they/we can't seriously use it yet with records/TCV's yet. When I'm only doing simple beat matching, I'll use VDJ and a Hercules MK2 controller [win xp on my MBP using Boot Camp... I know winBlows but I have to use it until the Mac version comes out ] because I don't trust windows or the current VDJ TCV's... but the music videos are entertaining and add an extra element to the atmosphere... unity.

My observation is that everyone in the clubs are more involved with eachother when the videos for the songs you're hearing are playing. Meaning, the people on the dancefloor are obviously enjoying the music but I've watched the crowd [both on and off the dancefloor] get drawn to the video and it's fun watching the people dancing imitate the dance moves on the videos [especially if it's an old school track!]. We've all been to clubs where the music is playing and there are TV's and/or projectors playing something, but that something usually has nothing to do ith the actual song being played. I find that that actually segregates the crowd, because the people in the club who aren't dancing are in a different state of mind because they're watching a sports game or a music video for another song, so nothings in sync.

Now play the actual music videos of the songs being heard and all of the sudden everyone in the club is enjoying the same thing, whether they're dancing or not... UNITY!

The good news is that Atomix released a timecode vinyl focused release of VDJ [version 4.2] on Sunday night [a Christmas present], and some of the TCV users are saying that it's a LOT better, but the feeling I get is that it's the more simple beat matchers who are cool with it, because other TCV users [I suspect the REAL turntablists and SERIOUS dj's] are saying that it's still not good enough.

THE BEST NEWS is that supposedly new TCV's [more like SSL in weight, thickness, and features] are wrapping up in development and possibly shipping in January, followed soon after by the finalized Mac version of VDJ and Numark's Virtual Vinyl which is supposed to be as good as SSL in TCV response.
