How do you identify the different generations of Ipods? What I understand is that the latest is Generation 5.5. Is there a 5.0? How do you tell the difference.

I have an unopened Ipod that is model "MA450LL/A Ipod 80GB Black". I see no generation information on the package. Do you go by serial # to tell generation? This has Johny Depp on the front and "Dani California, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stadium Arcadium" on the back.

And why are people selling what they call 6th generation Ipods on Ebay which are being bid up to over $400? This one is selling at $385 with time to go and it is called 6th generation. Ebay #110118635978

Apple's price is $349 I believe for the latest model which they say is 5.5. Why are people paying more on Ebay for the latest model? Like this one (150115747555) at $385 Buy it now which says MSRP is $599 and says it is being sold on the Internet for $449 or $100 over Apple's price.

Confused, is the 6th gen out already in Hong Kong and China? Could there be 6th gen on US streets before Apple announces it? How would you identify it if it was?

The 80GB is a 5.5G, you can tell this because the 60GB was the high end model of the 5G.

Yep, you have the 5.5 generation one. Here is Apple's complete guide to identifying iPod models.

Hi there,

Welcome to the forums.

The 6th generation iPod is yet unreleased. The ones you see on eBay are in fact the 5.5 generation ones. Those have a brighter screen (huge difference in my opinion) and better battery life. Also, the highest-capacity 5.5 gen is 80GB, while the 5 gen is 60.

Here is Apple's official "Identifying iPod models" page.

Retail price on 150115747555 is $349US. I have no idea why it would say $599.

Edit: Damn you WildCowboy :)
