Hey guys. I have a single 1.8GHZ G5. 1GB memory and whatever crummy GFX card that came standard.

I want to add 1GB more memory. My memory cards now are 2 x 512. Do I need to get 2 x 512 again to even out the cards, or can I just get one stick of 1GB by itself? Does the brand really matter? The cheaper the better I like it. But I don't want scum. Newegg has some for Mac... but I don't know what pin I need and all that junk.

And anyone suggest a good GFX card? I don't need anything stellar. Just anything better than that NVidia whatever came standard in the original G5's.

Thanks guys!

I have a nvidia 7800gs AGP in my dual 1.8 G5. I have 4 512mb sticks so 2gb in all. You don't mind a little hardware hacking you have quite a few options for video cards.

also its pc3200 ddr ram.

How are these?

Patriot Memory 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit Memory ($117.99)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220182

And what's the best GFX card thats cheap?

ATI Radeon 9200 Mac Edition ($129.99)

FYI: I have a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200...

WAIT!! I just checked my system and Im pissed. I don't have 2x512MB.... I have 4x256...yuck. Can I just buy 2x512 to get 2GB... or do I have to get 4x256 to have the memory card ratio the same? Thanks so much!

here read this http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86414 . it'll explain what you need way better than I could.

for the graphics card I have no clue what to recommend, sorry. Your options are pretty limited.
If you don't mind getting hands dirty check out http://themacelite.com/forums/ . They were formally another group but are now transitioning to another site so they are in a bit of a hectic state right now.

If you want to flash your own card I can give some help, nvidia cards only.

also you can buy a compatible card ship it off to somebody and for a small fee have it turned into a mac card.

You're recommending a PCI graphics card??? That's worse than an Nvidia Geforce FX 5200. There is no cheap alternative to the Nvidia Geforce FX 5200! If you wanted cheap, you have it already.

The PowerMac G5 you're talking about has an AGP graphics slot. So the options are the ATI Radeon 9600 Mac/PC, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition, and the ATI Radeon X800XT, and Nvidia Geforce 6800 Ultra or GT. The ATI Radeon 9600 Mac/PC is a slight improvement over the Nvidia Geforce FX 5200. The ATI Radeon 9800 PRO Mac SE is a definite improvement, but overprice IMHO. The best deal is the ATI Radeon X800XT.

Or just go to EBAY like everyone else on earth who's dissatisfied with the sparse & over-priced offerings of Apple and ATI.

You just haveto have matched pairs - I use http://www.datamemorysystems.com/ and it has worked out well. Video cards are a bit more work to find, but apparently ROKEM has found a solution - question for Rokem - once it is flashed are you are risk for future OS upgrades and leopard compatability?
