my problem following installing 10.4.10 whatever its called, was that i'd be on the internet for maybe 30 seconds and the airport would drop, or go grey (definitely not the router) and i would have to manually reconnect again using the airport drop down.

Heres what I did (and i now have no problems) however I don't think I actually fixed anything as none of my steps would seem possible fixes.

Went to my brothers G4 (tiger non updated) tower.
disconnected from router, reconnected
went to macbook clicked through internet settings etc etc not changing anything. went into router status, checked attached devices etc.

came out, turned off restarted next day seemed to work fine.

I'm probably about to get ridiculed for calling this a solution (as rightly it is not) im just telling my experiences.
FYI i'm using a netgear dg834g v3, (please dont hack me now i've told you that) :D

whew!

This is all good to know- i thought it was the new router that i installed. Do we know anything about a forthcoming patch? it is starting to be a pain having droupouts on my Wifi....

I'm getting the airport atheros kernal panics as well. OSX crashes fully and requires a complete restart. The panic gets reported to Apple upon restart and if I look at the log it is always something about the airport driver.

PLEASE FIX, APPLE!

I haven't had any kernel panics yet, however, I lose my wireless internet connection many, many times a day.
I have to go up to the menubar Airport icon and first shut it down, then turn it back on again in order to get it going again.
This never used to happen before the latest update.
I thought enjoying the internet wirelessly on a Mac was one of those "it just works" things. Not anymore.
Please Apple, I know this is a non-iPhone related issue, so it may not be so important to you, but could you please fix this problem?

I keep getting this as well on my new SR MBP. Had it since day 1 and so has a mate who I conviced to make his first foray into Macs. Since had it he was getting 4-5 KP a day like I do with it on battery. He ended up taking it back and has since bought a Dell laptop, so I now get tons of abuse about Macs crashing.

Was at the cinema last night when then "I'm a Mac advert" came on an it was the crashing on! DAM IT! I took some abuse for that :(

Have to agree though, my so called "laptop" can't go further than a plug socket without crashing. Sucks big time!

Oh and its works fine in XP Bootcamp! Proved this to the Apple support guys as why its not a hardware problem but instead a screwed up Apple driver.

Not good when an Apple OS crashes an Apple laptop yet cruddy XP works fine :(

My wifi drops constantly since the upgrade to 10.4.10 but only when running on battery power - plug it back into the mains and its fine. Flippin irritating when I want to use it on an evening.

Same here

Yep, same problem. I turn airport off and back on and I'm up and running but it's horribly annoying.

Kernel Panics

Genius bar visit yesterday confirmed my frequent kernel panics are caused by 1)the last security update, 2)using battery power, and 3)using my 2Wire modem, which is one of AT&T's default gimme modems and a major pain in the rear.

He said apple has announced the issue and should have an update/solution within two weeks. Until then, he gave me three options: buy an AirPort to tie into my network, call AT&T and try to have one of their (overseas speaking from a script and can't deal with questions outside the script) representatives help me with a workaround, or 3)keep it plugged in when I'm using it until the update hits.

I chose the free, least stressful issue. :)

Well it's good to hear Apple will soon have a solution. I use a Dlink DI604 router, along with an Airport Express for my wireless.
I've used this setup for quite some time with no problems ( up until this last Apple update), so I would have to say it's the update and not my hardware that's creating this problem.
I've also noticed the dropped connections only seem to happen when my Macbook is running on battery power.

Santa Rosa issues

I found this article in mac hardmac.com:
- Apple Acknowledges Two Problems Affecting MBP Santa Rosa - Lionel - 11:58:06 - Comments
Apple regularly sends TechNotes to the certified Apple Repair Centers to help them in identifying problems and dealing with sometimes unhappy consumer. Two new TechNotes dedicated to the recently MacBook Pro Santa Rosa have been submitted concerning issues we have already talked about in our news. If this is not an official acknowledgement, as that information is not supposed to be released to the public, it indicates that Apple is aware about those problems and is working on it:
- The first TechNote provides information concerning the Airport problem affecting the MBP Santa Rosa (but also other Mac Intel). When used on battery, the wireless connection drops and one can even experience kernel panic. Apple Centers are asked not to exchange affected notebook as this is due to a unidentified bug in the Atheros driver, and should be fixed in the future with a simple Airport system update. So for the moment, unfortunate users are asked to directly power their notebook when using wireless network, or using Ethernet connection when running on battery... in other words, turn your notebook into a desktop...- The second TechNote about MBP Santa Rosa is related to wave-like effect or uneven rendering by the LCD display. This problem is fixed in most cases by running "MacBook Pro Software Update 1.0" then "MacBook Pro EFI firmware Update 1.3". The panel will be exchanged if both updates did not fix the problem.

my g5's loosing wireless too!

i have this problem with my macbook and my powermac g5 dual 2.5 although on the g5 there are no kernal panics, just lost signals.I reformatted the macbook to 10.4.8 to fix it but there's no way i'm backing up the g5.way to tedious.i'll just go wired untill there is a fix.

Thats why these forums are important...

Thats the beauty of these forums because we all realize that its not a figment of our collective imagination, these forums bring to light important issues, anyway I believe that a solution is right on its way and even as important is the unity in wich these issues get discussed, one of the issues I had before with sluggish performance with routers etc is that I had to input the DNS numbers on the router itself etc, I also turned off ipv6 from the network settings, It sped it up dramatically.I found this article in Macosxhints or macfixit.com sometime ago, I think this issue occurred in OS X 10.3.7-9 now its come out again this is the article:
One of the most successful workarounds for this issue involves deleting networks and AirPort keychains then re-establishing them, as described here and in our tutorial "Improving AirPort reception, avoiding dropouts/lost connectivity, working around card/Base station recognition issues."
Now some users have reported that deleting the following file:
• /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
can resolve the issue.
MacFixIt reader Matthew Powell writes:
"I updated my Mac Mini Core Duo from 10.4.6 to 10.4.7 and had an AirPort problem. After a reboot, the machine appeared to associate to the access point, but didn't get a DHCP address. The interface got a self-assigned address instead. The 'Renew DHCP Address' button had no effect.
"I was able to get connectivity back by selecting 'Other...' from the AirPort menu, then re-entering my SSID and password. But connectivity was lost again after a reboot.
"I ended up deleting /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist and the System keychain entry for my AirPort, and then reconfiguring AirPort. I'm still connected after a reboot."

AT&T is fine

Is anyone else using SBC Global Yahoo A&T DSL service? The store where I purchased my computer now tells me that this problem is not with Apple, but with AT&T's service. He says it is not compatible with the Airport card. He suggested I purchase an apple wireless modem.

I'm just wondering if we all have the same service provider...this whole situation is crazy imho.

MsWrite, the problem is not with AT&T. Too bad you are getting faulty advice like that. I've had their DSL service for years and it's been VERY dependable. But the last few weeks, I've been losing my connection a lot. Multiple times a day. And my power cord is pretty much always plugged in. I was thinking it was either the 2Wire router or my MacBook's wireless card. Guess not, now that's I've discovered that others are having the same problem, and it seems to be software related, which is actually something of a relief. I just got an Apple Extreme Base Station because I wanted easy wireless printing and hard drive sharing, plus, I was hoping it might solve the connection problems. But no, it didn't. I was still losing my connection earlier today, but things have been fine for several hours now, so maybe it might be a help, but it's not a cure.

Just to add another data-point -- I get these drop-outs on my MacBook Pro even though all my WiFi stuff is Apple-made (two AirPort Expresses)

This is absolutely ridiculous that there is no fix for this yet!!! For the love of god, Apple, release a patch for this already!

Yes, this is officially becoming embarrassing. Maybe we all get rebates for the > a month that we haven't been able to use our laptops as laptops? Or free Airports (with Gigabit ports, of course)?

This patch should have been worked on 24/7 starting with the first few of us complaining about it and Apple should have had at least an interim solution posted two weeks ago.

Thank God

Thank God I found this thread. I was going crazy trying to figure out why my new MB 2.16 was having wireless problems!!!!

CHEERS!!!!! :apple: ;)

Thanks for this update. I am so disappointed with the whole apple computer experience I've had. --This is my first apple computer. I am seriously thinking about writing an article about this issue - I'm curious to know about how many people are actually having this issue. If anyone here is willing to be interviewed, please let me know.

I too have the same symptoms.

MB C2D and 2Wire 2700 router with WPAPSK. If I'm on battery the connection drops constantly and sometimes I even get a panic...

Running osx 10.4.10. Very annoying....

Airport Update 2007-004 is now available on Software Update, and it's "recommended for all Intel-based MacBook, MacBookPro, and Mac mini computers and improves the reliability of AirPort connections."

I installed it and now I'm on the battery power to see whether my Airport connection stays alive (on my case the problem occurred only when running on battery power). So far it's OK :)

I'm giving it a shot too. I've been struggling with airport drops after just minutes on battery, and occasional kernel panics, for a month now on my C2D MacBook Pro 2.16.
At the same time as the Airport Extreme Update 2007-004 I also installed, Pro Application Support 4.0.1, and Security Update 2007-07.
After the install and reboot (which took a little longer than normal - about 90 seconds, rather than 25-30) I have been running on battery with no kernel panics or airport drops for 30 minutes! Longer than I have been able to do it for a month.
So far, so good!
