Ok this new computer has done the same as my old pc! Got to about 100/400 frames for a 70 point unit + it restarted from 0 when the computer was restarted.

What should I do?

I've added my dual 1.4Ghz G4 since I got back to school. It definitely is a little quicker than my 366mhz iBook SE, but my iBook is still pumping through the folding as well. If I can, I'm going to try and "borrow" some of the Mac's at our library, but we'll see how that works out.

what client are you using?

plus, mine says 0 frames completed when I first restart, but then picks up where it left off in about a minute.

If you're at a school and the tech's are either n00b's or not paranoid about stuff, load a script onto a floppy and just walk around doing every computer, each less than a minute each. I'm sure mc68k's scripts can be adapted to use a non-changeable user-name etc. And I got rc5-72 scripts for both PC and Macs if anyone's interested.

If your school tech's are paranoid then you're kinda screwed. They might've blocked ports or not allow you to run various stuff and so on. I'm not sure if you can do it with folding but again, you can use a script that will load the done work units onto a drive, put fresh ones on the computer, and let it run again, all with no internet, so you can send them in from your own computer. Well that's for rc5 again of course. See what you can manage with folding.

Lastest version. Its just restarted again. It definatly does not restart the unit where it left off. I was looking for an email address of the folding people. However, did not find one. I dont want to go through the hassle of registering in their forums.

Are you shutting down the processes using the client or are you using Windows to directly kill them?

If you're doing the latter, you need to change your method as it does not give the core time to write the checkpoint information. This would mean that the closest checkpoint is the beginning--zero.

I am just shutting my computer down from the start button (I am using the GUI version for windows).

NB. It just restarted in the last half hour again! I did not restart my machine at all. Its just been sitting here.

this is getting really OT here...

I meant which client: console, graphical or screensaver.

also, try stopping the client and restarting it without rebooting, and read what the log says.

I am guessing that maybe the work folder is being created in a temp folder that changes everytime you reboot or run the program--hence loosing your progress. If this is totally wrong, look in your install folder for folding and look at the work folder and make sure that it is there, and output the end of your FAHlog.

something like this:

This is the contents of my log file. Not sure what is going on. Have tried restarting the GUI. Also tried re-installing etc.

Well, that's pretty much the same thing. Shut down the client first. You really shouldn't shut down any visible applications with the start button, unless they fell over, locked up, whatever.

You did have a bad work unit in there and you should get partial credit for it: whatever the score multiplied by the percentage finished. That certainly makes it look like it's starting over.

Its the Graphical version. Surely it must be designed to auto quit upon shutdown?

It may be but the process it spawns (the core) is not Windows-aware any more than it is Macintosh-aware.

The button tells windows to hard kill everything that is running, it does NOT give the programs much time to quite/save or whatever. If you said to shutdown, the system will wait for EVERYTHING to close, and if doesn't close it usually states an error (please save dialog, etc.) and stops the shutdown.

Also, just to make sure, does your system crash often? since folding does use memory for it's calculations, it is a good idea to have good memory. If you have bad memory windows will crash more often--folding will push out more bad WU's as well.

The computer is brand new. Just finished building it. Has 256Mb DDR brand name RAM. I could handle the program making me loose a frame or two. Its just the fact that it restarts from the beginning.

NB. Never had this sort of problem on the MAC!

Exactly.

I can attest to memory and crashes. I had a HP P4 machine. We added two 512MB sticks of Kingston Value RAM. We finally removed both one Friday after the machine had crashed 30+ times.
