Macbook will not turn off?

i have a leopoard blackbook that i got this christmas. Whenever i click apple, shutdown, it does not do anything usually. Some time it will bring up the shutdon screen where u click shutdown, but then it wont turn on. Sometimes, it will just altogether get rid of the silver bar at the top? Why will i not turn off and what can I do.

ps. ive tried ctrl option aplle eject

Have you run a repair and verify on your HDD? Might be some corrupted files.

You might also want to re-image your machine with a fresh install of Leopard.

Worse case, you can just disconnect the battery to power it down. :D

If you press and hold the power button for about 5 second you can force shutdown your system. But still, you shouldn't have to do that to shutdown your system. When you shut it down do you get any funny noises on bootup?

Agreed. The first thing I would do is verify the disk, and repair the permissions. Try resetting PRAM.
