Major G5 Crashing problems on brand new machine. Help!!

Hi all,

I've been posting on the Apple discussion boards, but haven't found a solution yet. I may have to just call Apple, but maybe you guys have some ideas.

Brand new DP 2.0 G5. Received yesterday. Panther pre-installed. I loaded up my software and added 1GB extra of Crucial RAM and everything was cruising. I'm loving it........then if happened. I have multiple programs running and I get the shut down or restart message. I do this and everything is fine for a while but then it happens again. It doesn't happen in any specific application, but always happens when I try to burn a DVD with Toast 6.

I have removed the Crucial RAM, re-installed Panther several times, ran the extended diagnostic test, unplugged all periphrials except for the keyboard and mouse and it's still crashing.

Any ideas?

Remove the Apple memory and try running it on the Crucial memory only.

Definitely run Disk First Aid, and command-s on boot then fsck -y -- to see if it's a drive volume problem.

If either of these find problems, you need to keep running them until they're gone.

But it can also be any application that you added causing (beside the default install) the problem.

I tried switching the RAM. Didn't work. I also tried command -s and then fsck -y, but fsck -y wouldn't work for some reason. fsck -f worked and found no errors.

I don't know what else to do. I've already wasted about 5 blank DVDs. I can get it to crash every time using Toast 6 to burn DVDs. It doesn't only crash in Toast though.

I also reset the motherboard. Didn't work either.

I am soooo frustrated. I bought a Mac because I built my last PC and had all sorts of problems isolating a bad memory problem. I thought for sure I would have a better experience with a brand new G5. Guess not.

You type whatever fsck command the computer tells you to when you boot into single user mode.

As you keep getting hints on other things to try.

Keep this in mind if this is second computer in a row, with stability problems...

A look at the power might be worth a shot, sometimes you end up with a machine sensitive to power line noise.

Usually worth a shot to plug it into a buddy's line conditioning UPS -- though the dual G5 generally takes a larger than average UPS.

You say you have several programs you installed running at the same time. I know this might be alot of work but trash the programs you installed then install one program run it for a while then install another and so on and so on. maybe its a software problem and you can isolate it.

First off, are you using anything "Norton"? If so, take that crap off your computer, as I would bet that's your problem.

If not...

Do a clean install, but do not install Toast. See if it still crashes.

If not...

You most certainly have a hardware problem. A bad hard drive or hard drive controller will do this. So will a heat sync that is not properly installed. As will bad RAM. Have AppleCare take a look at it.

I would say maybe you have a bad install CD. But I'd bet money that Apple doesn't install the OS from CD. They more than likely image the disk.

That may be the key.
Does anyone know if Toast adds any kernel extensions?? If so, there's probably your crasher.

Go to finder and click the "Go" menu and choose, "Go to Folder" in the sheet that comes down, type, with out the quote "/System/Library/Extensions" look for anything that has the name roxio or toast, or sort by date to see the newest additions.

If you do find something like those, first highlight the extentions folder and go to "File -> Get Info" click "permisions," click the lock, change the owner to your user name, if it asks for password, just put it in. Next, select each extention that has to do with roxio or toast, and again, change the permisions to make you the owner, then, with the files still selected, you should be able to do a "File -> Move to trash." With the extentions in the trash, do a reboot, if all goes well, and no more crashes, then its the roxio drivers...

...or, if you haven't moved any files over, try a full reformat and install.

I think I may have isolated the problem!!!!!!!!!!

It's Toast 6!!!!!!

I've had it uninstalled for about 6 hours now and no crashing.

The Roxio message boards have similar post of people having problems with Toast and Panther and apparently they are working on a fix.

Thanks everyone.

Now if I can just get rid of this high pitched power supply noise my G5 would be perfect.

Panther and Toast?

Interesting, I'm using a G4 Cube with Panther, and borrwed a friend's Sony external DVD+-/everything and then some burner to burn some CDs in toast 6 Titanium without a problem.

I wonder if its specific to the G5s?

bad logic board..

I had a similar problem with this in a dual 1.42GHZ G4. I had to take it in for service as nothing I did would fix it.. Come to find out that it was a bad logic board causing my problems. After they replaced the machine runs perfectly.. Take it in while it is still under warantee.

I may just do that tomorrow.

I've ran the hardware test a couple of times, and everything passes. Wouldn't a defective logic board show up there?

Not necessarily, especially if its an intermittant sort of problem. I've run OS X since 10.1 and I've only had one kernal panic the whole time, and it was under 10.1. If your computer is having kernal panics like this right out of the box, apple should have a look at it.

P.S. You can't run fsck because your HD has journaling enabled. That why you had to force it to get it to run... there's no reason to run it anymore.

hard ware check..

Running th hardware check disk did not help me!

It was spurratic so it did not find the error or problem when I ran the diagnosis. It would crash at various times and even took the technicians about 2 day to finally narro down the problem. I was tole this kind of problem is vary rare but it does happen form time too time.. Apple makes great porduct with an incredible OS but sad to say they are not always perfect. The kewl thing is they will stand behind it and fix it for you!

there is no need to run fsck with panther since it is a journaled file system. anyways, with jaguar this would have been the best approach.

reading the dump from the panic.log points either to the MLB or HD. the fact that the panic occurs during "data access" shows this. bring it to the apple store with printout of the panic.log.

apple hardware test does not test the HD which is why it may be showing no issues. apple hardware test does not test EVERY little piece of the logic board so the test may be missing something...

Well, I just called Apple support and needless to say the techs couldn't help me over the phone. I had already tried everything.

They are however sending me a new machine since mine qualified as DOA. They are emailing me Fed-Ex labels and as soon as I call them to let them know that I shipped mine back they will ship me a new one.

I'll report back when the new one comes in. Hopefully soon.........I'm also hoping the power supply noise will go away.

I think Toast is the issue. I bought it this weekend and as soon as I installed it I suffered the occassional crash. At times it even prevents the DVD-ROM from opening unless I reboot. Hopefully it's fixed soon.

Hi-
I am an apple specialist reseller/ consultant and warranty tech---
Sounds like a logic board or processor module- As with anything, occasionally you get a bad one- The good news is, provided you have a reputable service center around, they should be able to fix it quickly( Our turnaround time out here in the sticks is 2-3 business days for most repairs requiring parts as Apple is GREAT about overnighting all parts to their service providers) - One thing I DIDNT notice in your troubleshooting posts- do you have any peripherals plugged in , or are you using and apple flat panel display? Any Malfuntioning usb device has the ability to causes random shutdowns ( again- not frequent, but occasionally) Dont despair- Bad parts are the easiest thing to troubleshoot and fix ---
