you know wat else saves battery?

the sleep button on the top.

the power draw while asleep is minimal, especially considering youll eat a good 5% of the battery turning on the phone if you had actually turned it off.

I wonder if thats similar to the way people say its better to leave the car idle than to turn it off then on again.

BTW turning the car off and on is equivalent for being idle to 2 seconds.

no its nothing like that. Starting your touch/iphone kills a TON of battery because it isnt just loading from a HD, all flash.

To test:

look at battery
turn off
turn on
be shocked at how its gone down a good 1-2 bars

I thought all that did was refresh the battery indicator...

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3G: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

Is that not what holding home and sleep does? I didn't know there was a difference.

home and sleep is a hard reset, which in essence does the same thing i said. that way doesnt allow the device to be powered off tho, merely reset. Either way, restart it a few times especially if your battery is anywhere under 3/4 and youll see it chip away everytime.
