old news...

"To buy your iPhone 3G, start here and finish at the Apple Retail Store."

This has been up for awhile now. They don't ship it to you, you have to go to the Apple store to pick it up.

nope..they're shipping them to you as well

Once you’re done, reserve an iPhone at your nearest Apple Retail Store** where a Specialist can set up your iPhone just the way you want, from email to ringtones. Or order directly from the Apple Online Store and have your new iPhone shipped free to your door.

No it hasn't

😕

Hasn't the iPhone always been available for purchase on apple.com?

Whoa, sorry to call you out... Just refreshed the screen and saw the above. Good catch.

I hope this means they are trying to dump the current gen for the release of a new one.

that's what i'm hoping for!
i'm hoping they are selling off all the 3G's so they can bring in the new model:]

You still cant buy one from apple.com without going through the whole AT&T side of things. Still cant just buy an iphone how you would anything else from apple.com, like an ipod. I dont see an option that says "buy without any service plan," all I see is AT&T this and AT&T that......

Unless there's something "special" about buying it from Apple online, I don't see how this is newsworthy.

<shrugs> i just figured someone would mention it. It's no more newsworthy than posting about apps like Truphone, or Leaf Trombone being updated and such i suppose. And no worries Patrickdunn..i hope so as well.

Apple Online Store Now Offering iPhone 3G for Direct Shipment to New AT&T Customers

Engadget reports that Apple's US online store has started taking orders for direct shipments of the iPhone 3G. Previously, the iPhone was available only in retail stores when purchased from Apple, although AT&T offered sales both in its own retail stores and through its online store.

The new distribution method is valid only for customers new to AT&T, while existing AT&T customers will have to pick up their iPhones at local Apple retail stores. New customers are taken through a series of screens in which they must submit their enter their billing address to allow AT&T to run a credit check, select their rate plan, and either reserve an iPhone for pickup at a local Apple store or complete the purchase and have the iPhone shipped directly to them.

Yipee!
This is amazing!
Finally I don't have to go all the way to an Apple Store just to get myself an iPhone 3G! 😀

I wonder if this about clearing out existing iPhone 3G inventory or, instead, putting in place a better procedure to buy the next iPhone later this summer? Hmmmm... 😉

That's what I'm thinking. They're test driving this now to see if it will work for a new iPhone this June.

Let's hope with the next update to the iPhone Apple and AT&T go back to the original purchase and activation policy.

AT&T and Apple's sales policy for the iPhone 3G was a step backwards.

Let me buy online on launch day and activate from home if I want to! I don't want AT&T and Apple Store reps opening my box or trying to up-sell me accessories and plan changes. Let us get in and get out or flat out buy online. 🙄

This appears to work for current iPhone Edge customers as well correct?

I'm hoping Apple lets us purchase the new phone online.

Edit: Eh. It looks like they price it at the unsubsidized prices of $399/$499

This is exactly what this is about. Apple is probably having a hard time moving it since there will be many features (autofocus, video, etc.) which will be hardware dependent.

Not sure how they would do that since you have to sign a two year contract and the phone is sub. The original iPhone wasn't so it was no skin off ATTs back if it was never activated.

good times. Hopefully it will maintain the direct to customer option whenever the new phone is releaased...I also claim this story cause i posted it at 12:14and beat engadget 😉

We had to sign two-year contracts with the original iPhone also. AT&T could easily require a credit card for new accounts and simply charge existing subscribers on their accounts if the phone wasn't activated within a certain time frame.
