So even more obscure question... If I rip out the optical drive in my unibody Macbook, will it fit in there? Or is the optical drive 9.5mm?

Mine is an early 08 mbp. 250 drive on it now. Not unibody. Wonder which drive my 15" can hold. Any idea?

Well, I've been waiting for these > 500GB drives for months. So here it is, maybe not quite.

I measured the HD bay in my Macbook 13" (removable battery model), and there seems to be indeed enough space for a 12.5mm drive. So I ordered one 1 TB external USB today, and I'll get it tomorrow.

Now, something freaked me out today as I was looking at guides to take out the drives from the My Passport 2.5 USB units by WD. It seems like the drive in there might have been modified so that it won't retrofit as an internal HD.

That would suck big time. For some reason one cannot purchase the internal 1TB or 750GB right now, and I need the drive ASAP before I travel next week so I don't have to carry around an external USB. So I purchased the external version even though I really need just an internal HD ASAP.

Anyhow, I guess I'll find out tomorrow when I rip apart the drive to see what it's in. Let's hope it's a regular drive, and let's hope it does fit!!

I'll report of my findings here.

Crossing fingers...

This is good news.

First the 12.5mm HDs come out, then a while later we will see the 9mm ones. Getting closer for those of us who need 9mm HDs. :)

I'm looking more forward to the 1.5TB ones that will come along at some point. Then I could carry my entire DVD collection on my laptop as well as all my files without needing an external HD. *sigh* I wish it could be sooner.

And I'm sure some are waiting for 2TB drives. :)

We always want more storage space. Of that I am certain.

Guys: I got my 2.5" 1 TB My Passport essential today.
So yeah, I bought the external HD, because I can't wait for the internal version. I dismantled the enclosure to extract the drive.

NEWS:
- It's a regular drive inside, no special connector, so it's regular SATA connection. Awesome.
- IT FITS!! into a MacBook 13" Unibody (removable battery version)

I didn't finish the install because I'm missing the Torx T6 screwdriver I need to complete the install. But battery cover closes no problem if I just put the drive in without connecting the dampling thingy. Think it will fit as well once completely in place.

Will update later on once I have my MacBook 13" 1 TB up and running ;) I just need to find a freaking Torx T6 screwdriver!

But basically, for all of you wondering about WD 1TB 2.5 and MacBook unibody: GREEN LIGHT! GO FOR IT!

Finished setting up the drive in. It fits perfectly in the MacBook 13" Unibody.

Restoring the OS now from Time Machine. Will posts benchmarks when I get a chance.

where did you purchase yours? because I was not aware that they were shipping.

From the source: wdc.com

Amazon also has the 750GB one (and other common stores), but not the 1TB yet, you have to go to the western digital website apparently if you need the 1TB. Couldn't find it anywhere else.

Update on speed: I'm getting about 2x improvement in sequential reads and writes and between 1x to 2x in random IO compared to my original toshiba 250GB drive.

Does anyone know of any external Firewire 800 cases that will fit a 12.5mm drive?

Just installed a 12.5mm SSD in my 17 unibody MacBookPro

I have an early 2009 17 inch MacBookPro unibody. I received my SuperTalent SSD today which is 12.5mm tall. It fit in snugly, but I could not reattach the small plastic bar along the side of the drive. Didn't matter to me though, because the drive is so tight in the case, it isn't going to move around.

So, will it fit? Yes. Will it fit in the exact same way as a 9mm drive? no.

Now if I can only get the machine to recoginize the new drive....
