How do you terminate an application that is beachballing? In Windows, I would go to task manager and end the application. Searching Mac Help on the Mac and this forum did not help. The application that is stuck is Word for Mac. Tried to copy a Safari screenshot to Word.

How to terminate application?

You could open up terminal (applications->utilities->terminal) and type "killall (process name)." The process name is most of the time just the app name, but some app's process name is different than their app name, so make sure you know the process name or it won't work. These process names can be found in the activity monitor (you can also kill apps from this if you want, it might be easier, I just find the terminal method quicker.)
Similar to this: press command-option-esc (or selcet force quit from the Apple menu) to get a window with the current open apps. select and terminate the one you want.
To summarize:
First option:
Press <COMMAND <OPTION> <ESC> together, and you'll get a Force-Quit menu.
Second option:
Right-clink the app in de Dock. You should get the contextual menu allowing you to force-quit the app.
Third option:
Open Activity Monitor (In /Apps/Utilities). Select the app, and select the option to force-quit this.
Fourth option:
Fire up Terminal (In /Apps/Utilities). Type "top" <ENTER>, and recognize the app, and remember the PID (shown on the left). Then type "kill [PID]" <ENTER>
This last option has the best chance of success if something bad has happened. It could be that your troublesome app also spawns other GUI troubles, making the first 3 options difficult to execute.
