That was Unicom. This is a different company.

This can be a huge thing to US customers also. If Apple will make changes to the iPhone for the Chinese networks at a cost effective way, they will be able to do the same for US companies that have 4G networks.

Since China (the country) is trying to wreck Apple's value added plans within their country, just sell them a legit Apple phone with all the cripples installed the government wants, but charge full boat for it. That way Chinese citizens can see how they are treated by their captors.

Then the majority of "cool" iPhones in China will be black market and at an even higher cash premium.

What companies have 4G networks? Sprint is using Wi-Max which is not a 4G standard of the 3GPP. LTE is the 4G standard being adopted by both CDMA providers like Verizon, Bell (Canada) and Telus (Canada) but also GSM providers like AT&T, Rogers/Fido. Nobody has rolled out 4G yet.

To call Sprint 4G is laughable when Rogers has just rolled out an HSUPA (3.5G GSM) network at 21Mbit/sec down and 5Mbit/sec up compared with Sprints 10Mbits/sec fake 4G network.

There is already one 3G GSM network at 28Mbit/sec (TIM Italy) and in November Telstra in Australia will launch the first 42Mbit 3G GSM service (real world 17Mbit/sec sustained). Next year 58Mbit HSPA will be available on Networks managed by Ericsson.

The 4G evolution of GSM and CDMA network called LTE offers peak speeds starting at 150Mbit with the first round of devices, with a forwards compatible upgrade path to multi-gigabit speeds. LTE offers backwards compatibility with the 800 GSM family networks around the world, and incorporates optional compatibility with legacy CDMA and WiMax networks.

Mobile Wimax struggles to give its 3Mbit sustained speeds, and has poor coverage characteristics duew to the high frequency used. For a variety of reasons, Wimax equipment vendors have been promoting Wimax as a stopgap measure before LTE, and most WiMax base station can be upgraded to the slower variants of LTE if a new core network is installed. It is anticipated in the long term that Wimax network migration will be part of the LTE standard, just as CDMA and GSM are.

Clearwire forsees a future where they will upgrade to LTE.
