An Apple spokesperson said the company was "blown away" by the response to the iPhone 5, according to a statement obtained by The Loop.
"Pre-orders for iPhone 5 have been incredible," said Apple spokeswoman, Natalie Kerris. "We've been completely blown away by the customer response."

The iPhone 5's initial shipment sold out within hours of going on sale early this morning, with shipping estimates slipping to 2-3 weeks by this afternoon. The iPhone 5 goes on sale next Friday.

So much for the conspiracy theories that Apple was holding back!

Will be interesting to see if they release some actual numbers at some point. I wonder if this exceeded 4S preorders. I'd have to imagine it would, but who knows.

I loved the 4S. I feel like the iPhone 5 improved it in every way. I am hoping for new iOS updates in winter 2012 / spring 2013 though.

for those lining up, this may be worse than the iphone 4 launch. They had some crazy 4 hour lines.

Glad I got mine in! I'm guessing they'll give us a bunch of official numbers at the iPad mini event next month.

Bet this is why when we ordered last night there was no option for store pickup. They anticipate this line coming and having one for pre orders and first come first serve like they did for the 4 sucked. I remember standing out in like for those 4 hours at noon in Summer...sucked

When was the last time Sam(e)sung was blown away? Hmm??

Galaxy SIII launch was quite successful

The fact that it was sold out in an hour just means supply was less than demand. If they had 2 and got orders for 3, it would be sold out. It has nothing to do with record-breaking sales figures, yet at least. The initial supply just might have mean a lot less this year. This is no information until they quote actual pre-order unit sales.

For all we know, Apple might have just held back supply to purposely say they were sold out in hour for publicity. I'm not saying that's the case, but it's possible. :)

when I saw it sold out in an hour my first thought was looks like they have a smaller stockpile for launch. but the more I think about it.....how many people passed up the 4S because it "wasn't all new" then add how many people who have been complaining about no LTE for 2 years plus all the diehards that buy no matter what. this will be a record launch probably by a landslide.

Apple is going to end up killing it with the iPhone 5. I believe their pre-oders are going to far exceed the 4S, with shipping times being pushed back just 4 hours after pre-orders began, it leads me to believe they will have some crazy numbers. And come launch day, this may be the biggest launch yet, times two.

I'm pumped of Apple, I'm proud of the customers and what we will be able to accomplish together. I cant wait as I will be 'camping' out in front of my Apple Store come Thursday the 20th. Can't come soon enough.

Maybe Samsung can make a video of how you can sleep in on order day and still get release day shipping for their phones.

It would go well with their "Apple long lines" themed commercials.:D

Nothing like touting the popularity of other devices to promote your own.

My impression was that this was the smoothest online launch, so the quick sell out isn't a surprise.
