kernal panic help

Hello,
Over the last week I've had 2 of what I have now discovered are called "kernal panics". I've had this SR 2.2 for about a year and a half. I had one prior to installing SL last week 1 this week after installing SL. Other than the "You must restart your computer" message following the crash I've not noticed any other problems. I have not installed any RAM or other hardware. I've pasted the kernal panic report with the hope that someone might be able to help decipher what it means and what the issue might be. thanks for the help!

The fact that backupd was the current thread probably means that Time Machine was running at the time of the crash, but that may have nothing to with the cause. A page fault may indicate some kind of memory problem, but without knowing the symbolic references that correspond to those addresses there's probably nothing definitive that can be said.

thanks

I was having trouble w/ time machine this week so it may have been at one of those moments when I was trying to figure it out. Anyway thanks for the help. I'll definitely take note of exactly I was doing if it happens again.

another Kernal Panic

Hi All,
I just had another kernal panic that froze the computer and forced me to restart. This is the third one in about 3 weeks. Before that I've never had any such problems so I'm starting to get worried about it. I'm pasting the results and was hoping that someone might be able to tell me what might be going on. I was simply browsing macrumors when this one occurred. Although, I should also say that Microsoft Office 2008 crashed on me just a few minutes before that.
Thanks for any insights.

Most likely caused by Cisco (VPN?) client or Syncmate.

I use Cisco VPN to get online at school but I'm home now and was not using it. I think I had quit the program too. Don't know what Syncmate is. Are you suggesting though the possibility that it could be a software issue? I thought that they were hardware related?

I use Cisco VPN to get online at school but I'm home now and was not using it. I think I had quit the program too. Don't know what Syncmate is. Are you suggesting though the possibility that it could be a software issue? I thought that they were hardware related?
Most of the time they are related to software. There is no report of any possible hardware failure. So, according to this, http://mac.eltima.com/sync-mac.html, that is what sync mate it. Remove it if not needed. Same deal with VPN.

A perfect example is when I had my kernel panic, it was caused by anti-virus application, removed it and not one kernel panic since (around 3 months). Sometimes Macs don't work well with applications that cause issues.

Download and install AppCleaner and try and see if it picks anything up. It has to be somewhere there.

Before that, go to USERS/YOUR USER NAME/LIBRARY/PREFERENCES and look for something that begins with com.eltima.SyncMate or similar.

Yes. And report back, please.

Remember to trash it, empty trash and then restart before continuing.

We'll then go from there.

just found a similar file syncmateStarter.plist in the LaunchAgents folder and a file called com.mozy.backup.plist in the LaunchDaemons folder. When I had the 2nd kernal panic someone wondered if I had the problem while trying to backup. I wasn't but I did recently delete mozy since I wasn't using it and wonder if that might also be related. Should I delete these 2 files as well?

Yes. All .plist files are safe to delete. However, please keep in mind that, if the application is still installed and in use, all settings and options inside that application will be set to default.

While at it, look for a VPN .plist file and remove that too. Try and get rid of all possibilities. Remove anything else that you have questions about to, or post them here.

Now just try and see if a kernel panic pops up. Nothing else than that.

You need to delete the kernel extensions. Plist file only store settings etc. Also, it doesn't matter whether you use the programs or not, drivers are loaded on boot which may cause your kernel panic.
Open System profiler>Software>Extensions, find the entries for cisco and syncmate. Look for location and remove it from there.

thanks to you both

if I use the Cisco VPN should I still delete the extension. I guess if its causing the freezes I'll get rid of it but can I delete the extension and still use VPN?

If you delete the kext, it won't work probably.
Take it out for a while if you are not using (restart after removing), see if thats the cause of the panics.

No problem. If you ever have another kernel panic, just post back here and someone will help you out.

I'm almost sure it is your cisco VPN software. I had this problem with the cisco VPN software where it would kernel panic my machine. Basically any intense network traffic while the VPN is running will kernel panic the computer. TimeMachine for example which uses the network intensely is a good example of a process that will KP your computer with older cisco VPN versions.

Upgrade to the latest version to fix the issue.
