Cables and monitors

I have read some worrying views regarding apples mini display port cables and non apple monitors. I as wondering if anyone had the following set up and which cable they used?

uMBP 15inch early 2009 - airport express slot / removable battery
Dell UltraSharp2408WFP LCD

Or other 24 inch monitor or dell monitor

some of the cables on apples mention 20-23 inch monitors. Now I presume it is going to be ok, but i know you need the expensive cable for the 30 inch and wondered if 23 was the max size for the standard DVI cable
