I see no reason for this. If it's tied to inflation, and it's negative, why would we increase SS? I'm confused. Just like it p***ed me off when property taxes here are tied to property values. When property values went down, taxes didn't. That's not right.

Social Security is to keep up with inflation. We had negative inflation. So why the raise? Doesn't make sense on those merits.

On a different note, Social Security is not enough to live on. Maybe an increase in Social Security is reasonable and needed. But that is a different topic.

Yes, it sounds a tad on the silly side but if he did absolutely nothing to address the lack of an increase to social security next year, people would be complaining about that too.

And how is the cost of living LESS now? Other than maybe property prices (which are irrelevant to the vast majority since loans are not so easy to come by) I don't see prices for anything going down. In fact, since the 'downturn' I seem to notice prices of most things rising. Maybe that's just good old rip-off britain but I can't imagine it's all that different in the US. Life costs never seem to decrease. Not in any significant way to the average person.

Energy prices are quite a bit lower this year than last. Gas averaged $3.48 a gallon last October and averaged $2.47 this month. I also read that home heating will cost the average homeowner about $400 less this winter than last. Electric rates are also lower than last year.

Do you have kids? From them. Something that every one of these millions of homeowners are learning is that every debt has to be repaid eventually. If you borrow money today, you may not have to pay it back today or tomorrow, but you will the day after that.

By then, the folks that are incurring the debt - the Bushes and Obamas of America - will be long gone, and many of the folks left with the bill - kids and young adults - won't have had a say in the least.

Inflation may not have gone up, but seniors costs have. Medicare and medicaid, Prescription meds, and any other effects of aging. Besides the fact, they paid in the money off their lives.

However, $250 isn't going to do squat- just Like Bush's $600 tax rebates didn't so squat.

I wasn't referring to that, as $250 spread out over 12 months, is meaningless. I was hoping they would change there mind though and do an increase, at least 2+ % as needs of the retired are still there. Though some can and do choose to work, they are limited on the number of hours, or face cuts in the SS money.

Edit - Oh, bush's money did do something, it let me get my iPod touch.
