To upgrade or not to upgrade. 10.4.11 to SL?
I'm certain if I search I will find plenty of info, but I'm an old man and my time is of great value so if you have a kind heart and a wealth of knowledge would you share a list of pro's and con's for upgrading an iMac from Tiger to Snow Leopard?
My computer: Model Name: iMac Model Identifier: iMac5,1 Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores: 2 L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB Memory: 1 GB Bus Speed: 667 MHz Boot ROM Version: IM51.0090.B09 SMC Version: 1.9f4 Thanks! JP |

You probably shouldn't do it if your time is of great value.

if I were you, I wouldnt.
CONs You have the minimum RAM requeriment Upgrading takes time Troubleshooting the upgrade takes even more time Some 3rd party apps. may require upgrades SL isn't old enough, it still has some quirks If it aint broke, dont fix it PROs Some apps are dropping Tiger support Apple may drop Tiger support in the near future Last edited by JavierP : Oct 19, 2009 at 03:29 PM. |

Don't even think about it until 10.6.4. If you have a pressing need to get off Tiger, move to Leopard 10.5.8 instead.

Most of the pros you would get just upgrading to Leopard, which is now a very stable OS. SL might give you some performance gain, depending on the applications you run. But SL, as others have noted, is in the early, rather buggy stage of its life. Unless you're willing to risk some instability you'd be better off waiting.

Ram
I would beef up your RAM to the maximum (might be 3GB), and you can do that here rather cheap: www.otherworldcomputing.com
Last thing, if you do this, you should do a completely clean installation meaning reinstalling your applications (which are not on the disk itself) manually. Do not try migrating anything. Install using the erase and install option. You should be fine, but you need more memory. |
