Mac Pro Daily Kernel Panics
Hey everyone. My first post.
I'm having the following issues with my Mac Pro. I'm hoping you might have suggestions and can help me interpret my Kernel Panic (below). Specs:
Problems:
Troubleshooting I have taken the following steps to fix it (both at the apple store, with phone support and on my own).
I have been getting Kernel panics on and off for months. But I have had about 20 in October. Is this unacceptable? Should I insist on a replacement computer? I'm not really comfortable with them swapping hardware if they dont' know what's going on. I'll post my most recent Kernel panic in the next post. Last edited by ialsoeathummus : Nov 3, 2009 at 11:22 AM. Reason: Added more hardware info |

Can you elaborate on this please?
In my experience, kernel panics are usually related to a hardware issue of some kind, especially if the machine doesn't always produce a display on boot. I would swap the RAM before anything else and see if the issue clears up. I know you said you'd ran the AHT already, but I'd still start with memory and go from there. EDIT: You posted your KP info while I was typing this post. I am not familiar with interpreting that kind of data, so my recommendation still stands based on the other information you've provided.

![]() It sounds like you may have a logic board issue. I'd take it back to the Apple Store.

One would imagine so, but if the system doesn't always produce a display, you've got a hardware issue of some sort.
Are there any other parts in the system you can swap out or temporarily remove from the system? Additional hard drives, optical drives, a video card, etc? At the end of the day, if the system is under warranty, I'd suggest letting the guys at the Apple Store take a second look at it. If nothing else, you'd be one step closer to a replacement.

![]() I don't even want a replacement, as much as I want a computer I'm sure isn't a lemon. I would hate to have them swap the logic board, and then the original problem shows itself again once my warranty is out. So do they have a way of knowing what the hardware problem is besides just swapping parts in trial and error? |

Can we learn anything from the Kernel Panic Report? I have no idea how to read it. Is it saying something about the CPU?

You might try printing the report out and bringing it with you when/if you go back to the Apple Store.

Looks like you have taken it in, but I'd have them look at it. If they have to replace everything then that's a good time to ask for a replacement.

My MBOX caused kernal panics on a daily basis on every Mac I used it with. It got really aggravating after a while, but it was the price of using Pro Tools. It usually happened when I tried restarting or shutting down. Once in a while it would happen when I was using a program.

Does the above kernel panic carry info about my system specs?
I took out my RAM and hard drive for a period of time and still had the same panics. However, during that kernel panic, the RAM and HD's were indeed in the computer. I don't want Apple to give me a problem by attributing it to 3rd party hardware if I show them this. Will they see that from this report? |

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)
I'd guess at pro tools being the culprit. Pro tools drivers don't like sleep. See if you can find a page online on how to optimise your mac for PTLE or do what I did (buy a MOTU) |

I am no expert on kernel panic reports, but all I can tell from what you've posted is that you have a Mac Pro with an Intel Xeon processor and some details about the software installed on the machine.

And today's panic
I wiped my drive completely. No 3rd party software or hardware. Fresh OSX install. Today was a gray screen on startup. And here's the report:

I Have The Same Issue
I had.... the same issue anyway. I had kernal panics repeatedly on and off for months so i sent it off and got it back today with a new logic board put in. I haven't had kernal panics but haven't had the chance to as it now will not install ProTools or even boot from the OS X Install disk. I am seriously not happy with the service, they are picking it up again. I have had problems with it ever since i got the thing. First the USB's on the front didn't work, then kernal panics since december! Now this! I didn't realise they offer to send a new one out to you if problems persist. Considering it has just left the repair centre you would think they tested everything before sending it back out to me.
Losing it serious...... |
