Verizon raises Early Termination Fee to $350 for smart phones

Wow. Droid, and all of the other phones deemed "smart" will be tied to an ETF of $350 after November 15th.

You thought $175 for an ETF was bad, now the ETF costs more than the PHONE!

Verizon will probably add data transfer limits if they have the iPhone.

Note that iPhone, 2.5% of market, uses 50% of mobile traffic.

More the reason not to switch to Verizon.

Just throwing this out there:
Maybe they are increasing the ETF NOW, so when the iPhone comes to them, they dont get that BS where people buy, it and cancel 31 days into contract for another company.

Its just a thought. Maybe its a preemptive strike?

I think Verizon also wants to charge $15 more for those using Exchange accounts.

Some day...we will have affordable plans...

I sadly seeing other carriers adopting this policy. It's in preparation for them switching over to LTE (amongst other things).

A real shame. Verizon has outstanding service on Long Island (IMHO) and trounces AT&T in every single way.

EDIT: Wow. An extra $15 for exchange email?!?!?! Are they f**king high!!?!?

When I lived in Queens, Verizon was the worst. They did work well on LI though.

Or it could be in preparation of the next carrier specific launch so that it won't be another episode of everyone leaving like they did to get the iPhone.

Wow... Verizon forces its customers to pay a "termination fee" but American taxpayers bailed out banks that keep Verizon afloat and Verizon itself paid no termination fee for federal aid. Imagine that! Want to punish Verizon for its termination fee? Don't buy Verizon...

Wha? Verizon posted a $6 billion dollar profit in 2008. Seems like they're floating themselves. The only "bail out" or "stimulus" money you see associated with the wireless carries is the gov't basically bribing them to provide high-speed internet to rural areas, and AFAIK, none of them took it.

I expect to see AT&T to do the same thing soon. It is all follow the leader.

AT&T started with forcing Data plans on the iPhone and people accepted it. Verizon saw this and saw that they could just force data plans on all smart phones. Then the others copied it. AT&T with in 6 months will raise there ETA fee up to $350 to match.

I would not be surprised by this at all, unless AT&T uses it for a marketing advantage (which would be really dirty of them).

They are probably doing this because of blackberry and the waves of people pouring over the storm 2 (just like the first version) then backing out when they realize its not the greatest. (just like the first version).

I had a blackberry and it wasnt that great. There are alot of sweet phones out now and blackberry isnt one of em

Thankfully, people still get 30 days to back out (after a purchase) before the ETF comes into play.

I really think the majority of people that this new ETF will effect are the people scamming the "buy any BlackBerry, get a second BlackBerry for free" promotion that Verizon's been running.
