iPhoto: Are comments and keywords usable by other apps?

I want to start organizing all the old family photos I've been scanning, but I also am worried about tagging them in a way that won't be useful in another decade. Specifically, I have no idea if iPhoto's comments and keywords are added to the EXIF metadata in a way that a different app could use them later on. Does anybody know?

If not, is there another solution for tagging and keywording picture files in a nice portable way, i.e. attached to the image files directly?
