Volume Controls on 1st Gen iPod Touch

I have a first gen iPod touch and the volume controls (which is the on screen slider) has gotten all messed up. The slider will move up and down when I touch it but a lot of the times it will bounce back to the same position. In addition the volume doesn't always match where it is shown on the slider. Any suggestions? It is a recent problem and have not been able to find any settings that would allow me to fix it. Not a problem on my son's third gen so other than stealing his, how do I fix it?
