Ad-Patent from Apple... Couldn't I have done that myself? (And I'm 17)

After reading that, I was wondering, an idea like that, couldn't I have filed a patent myself, paid $8000, and had that patent to myself? Then these companies would have to buy the patent from me or pay me to use it?

I was just curious, what would have been the barriers making it unlikely for me to have done that? :P

Jesus must have missed that patent. Apple are very very smart. Think about this from another point of view and u may see what apple is upto.
