Spaces behaves erratically when I use OpenOffice Calc program

This is my problem : I am looking at an OpenOffice spreadsheet in Spaces #3, and I want to format some cells, but instead of an appropriate dialog popping up, I get shifted to Spaces #1. Sometimes the dialog comes up, but when I move my cursor to select something, I am taken to another Space. I never had this problem before and have only just started to use Spaces.

The data I am looking at is actually a MS Excel sheet, so is the problem an OpenOffice one or has anyone else seen this bug and how can I stop the focus jumping around?
