To stop the backup in progress, go to the Time Machine menu icon (which is probably turning counter-clockwise) or to the Time Machine preferences in System Preferences. After you stop the backup, you can tell Time Machine to Select Disk and set it to none. Depending on how far into the backup it got before you stopped it, you may just want to erase the external drive through Disk Utility.

System Preferences > Time Machine > OFF

Every time you connect a new external drive to your Mac, this message will come up.

Hi, Matt. In System Preferences click on Time Machine (Under System, 4th row down from the top). Then click on 'Select Disk' and set it to 'None'. Finally, when you return to the Time Machine preferences slide the big switch to 'Off'. If Time Machine has already created a backups.backupd directory you can just drag it to the trash to reclaim your HD space.

Cheers.
