Recover free space? :/

I have this blank space on my hard drive and i want to know how i can recover this space on my Main HD, can anybody help me out?

Format the free space. It'll show up as a second partition. I don't think you can expand the first partition because the free space is before it, so the starting location of the partition would change (a no-no for live partition resize).

Alternately, backup to Time Machine, format, and choose the Time Machine option when re-installing the OS.

Probably not the answer for which you were hoping.

What caused it to be like that in the first place? I think that's the key to fixing it.
