Loss of power/screen issue
Hello,
My mate has a 2011 iMac. The screen will boot up for perhaps only 2 secs when powered up via a normal short press of the power button. A long press triggers the fans / cpu but the screen remains black for circa 40 secs, then it quickly turns white for two seconds and shuts down again. Any advice please? I have asked him to check his power lead, it is connected directly to the wall socket and the input is securely in the iMac.

So, it does not boot into the System at all, you don't mention this after a short press.
Hold the D key at startup, it will get you into Apple Hardware Test, see if there are any Hardware problems. |

Try shining a torch into the screen to see if the computer's actually on, but the backlight is dead.

All sorted apparently - he had 30 mins of madness but he says all settled now - perhaps he dimmed his screen via the keyboard ;-)
