mac 10.5.8 startup issue

I am using a mac 10.5.8, and whenever i start up, the loading screen with the spinning thing appears, loads up the blue screen, and stops there. I can move the cursor around and the computer sleeps and wakes normally, but i cant go any further. I tried typing the code in on single-user mode that comes from this:

but with no luck.
