What a great publicity stunt.. get someone to start a rumor so everyone talks about it, then deny it. Surge of new users, here they go!

I didn't say it will (read before putting words in my mouth) but there is a possibility that it could, since Google makes money from advertising. Just because some Google apps don't have adds it doesn't mean Google won't have adds on this one. I, personally prefer to pay $0.99 a year and not have any Google crap floating in the app am using.
Now.... do you have any other question?

Seriously, some people have no idea how free really is a free app!!

How naive!! Why would Google call you?
Google clients on the other hand won't hesitate to talk to you about their latest products.

Right...

Now Apple makes money from hardware and software products.
Tell me genius, how does Google make money?
Yeah... thought so.

Ahhh... so Apple makes money from iAds? How could I possibly not known that Apple is an advertising company!! And yes, if a Google client calls or spam you with messages they are going to introduce themselves as Google clients. Seriously.....

It's an advertising platform for app developers/third party apps and Apple takes 30-40% from it. You are not telling me that Apple is breathing the $ air from it? I think Apple makes money from advertising just as much as Google makes money from selling hardware.

Anyway.... the naivety of some people in this forum amazes me. How can anyone think that Google would pay 1 billion $ for an app and not get something on return?? Really?

Selling Android Licenses, I image they get a cut from Nexus devices, selling mapping data to users, geocoding telemetry data, google drive, selling on the play store, adverts and probably a lot of other things.

Apple try and make money on ads to using their terrible iad service omg.

So Google just give away the nexus devices ?

Again get a grip and put your hat back on, nobody gives a damm about you and your "private" life (keep thinking is private)

Apple holds every detail of your iphone with phone number, name, family and friends imessages, notes and omg browser history

Eh hello I nor anyone I know ever heard of this app, OBVIOUSLY we are able to text each other perfectly fine without it. For me and those who I communicate with theres simply no need for this app thats all I'm saying.
Except that I'm not claiming SMS "isn't needed" because it doesn't fit my usage patterns. You're claiming Whatsapp "isn't needed" because it doesn't meet yours.

It's not that Whatsapp is the only messaging app that matters. I use it for one function only - group chat with 2 friends over iOS and Android. For a meagre 0.69p each, we can all continue the conversation across our differing OSs, get read receipts etc, send each other photos, and do it all in one place. We can't do that via SMS. That doesn't mean SMS "isn't needed". It just doesn't meet our requirements.
