iMessage Dock Icon -1

So today when I opened my computer I had -1 messages. Apple really needs to get their stuff together next time. Anybody have any thoughts on why it did this?

my initial thought is loneliness. The app wants someone to talk to. But seriously, I am interested as well. I have never seen that before.
