US Government Apps & Websites Down

US websites are down and apps no longer function (ie NASA).

I'm going to an FAA Seminar, so at least FAASafety.gov still functions.

Terrible, terrible shame...

Welcome to the libertarian world.

For every week that the government shutdown continues, 10 children with cancer will not be able to begin their clinical trials, officials told ABCNews.com.

John Burklow, a spokesman for the National Institutes of Health, estimated that 200 patients would experience these delays each week of the shutdown.

Since 15 percent of these patients are typically children, and 33 percent of these children have cancer, that means the patients facing delays would include about 30 children per week, 10 of whom have cancer, he said.

I'm sure those children and their families will be celebrating their freedom from slavery.

Wow...

You would think that as far as the web content, they would keep it static (like on some sites).

But for sites like NASA, the stuff is completely gone...

What did they do - shut down that Data Center?

I don't understand why the sites have to shut down? Are they paying for these things by the hour? If that is the case there might be more waste than we thought.

Seems like it. Datacenters consume a lot of electricity, which costs money. Plus, without staff to manage drive failures, tape backups, and other regular maintenance tasks, it's probably better to simply shut things down for the time being rather than risk something that leads to an actual loss of data or a system.

In general, you can't leave any kind of complex website completely unattended even if it hosted by a third party. Certainly no large business would do that. Electricity would be the least of your worries.

Good point. With nobody monitoring the security events, a hacker would have lots of time to probe for vulnerabilities without having to worry about active countermeasures.

Think of all the Educators, Students, and Learners (people like me who love Space or maybe History), that use these sites on a daily basis for News and Education.

It's just unfathomable....

Says, "Sponsored by The Ford Motor Company Fund" so it supposed to still be running...

Ford should complain...

So then, where's Ford's money going?
