You may need to take your blinders off before commenting... When people comment about the size of Phoenix, they're usually commenting on the metropolis as a whole. Furthermore, As of the 2010 census, there were 4,192,887 people, 1,537,137 households, and 1,024,971 families residing within the Phoenix-Mesa-Glendale Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which is defined it as Maricopa and Pinal counties.

On a serious note it's no joke if you've been to certain parts of Australia with no access to water. I've been to some arid places around the globe but Australia's heat was something I don't plan on experiencing again.
