All iPads: Since the iPad 5 moving past Retina, maybe the mini will also get the IGZO display

Recent reports are that the iPad 5 will not come with a Retina Display but that it will sport Sharp's new IGZO display.

Its said to be thinner, lighter and has higher pixel density than Retina.


So, maybe the iPad mini 2 wont ever have a Retina. Maybe they will go directly to the IGZO display for the mini bypassing Retina totally.

It having an IGZO display wouldn't affect the resolution as the IGZO display is simply a type of display panel and the advantages over typical display panels are power savings.

Actually the IGZO has many advantages over the Retina.

Its Thinner, Lighter, uses less power, less cpu to drive it and it has a Higher Pixel Density.

Sure the Resolution will be the same size, but it will have more PPI

That's what I'm saying. Power savings. It uses far less power than current displays, but it all depends on the size of the display. If the iPad 5 has the same 2048x1536 display as the iPad 4 in the same 9.7" size, the PPI will be the same regardless of the fact that the iPad 5 might have an IGZO display.

IGZO technology is independent of resolution, screen size, and PPI. You can have a low PPI IGZO screen or a high PPI IGZO screen.

Retina means a high ppi. It does not mean a particular screen technology. The IPad 5 will have a retina IGZO display.

Apple will not increase the total number of pixels because devs would have to program for a new resolution. That's the same reason why the retina mini will have the same resolution as the retina iPad.

And again, the IGZO screen will be considered retina as well.

PPI=Resolution/Screen Space. The only way to increase PPI is to either increase resolution or decrease screen space. That's it. If you're still having trouble, try googling what PPI is. Please.
