Mountain lion mail slow down

I really like the new Mail in ML, but it's just super slow. I assume this is a common complaint and not isolated to my machine since everything else runs great. Any fixes out there?

Yeah - I definitely experience that, but I think that is more due to the fact that apple doesn't allow 'push' with gmail on our macs like it does on our iphone (why, i have no no idea..)

I was referring to just the general lag involved in searching, clicking on messages, etc..
