Oh is it, so we have been given the choice of using Google Maps in 3rd party apps.

I'm still copying the address from 3rd party apps and paste into Google Maps to display the map, thanks to the useless build-in Apple Maps being set as the default in 3rd party apps.

AFAIK, 3rd parties can opt to use Google's API instead (and fall back on Apple Maps if it isn't installed).

Same here. I prefer Apple maps over alternatives

haven't really read anything about apple maps in 6+ months since we all know they sucked. and since then? zero improvement. what is apple doing? the streets in my neighborhood are all wrong. and why is there no effective way to fix these glaring errors like google's mapmaker?

and what kind of algorithm is apple using to show a city's significance, especially in the weather channel's app? at some zoom levels i can see the town of weogufka which nobody has heard of (population of under 500) but not birmingham (largest city in alabama). no clanton, opelika or alabaster (decent sized towns) but goldville (tiny) is front and center.

also, what cities have been added in 3D over the last several months?

They work more on the city area expansion in the big cities. Check for example the area of Stockholm's flyover. Toronto was expanded too, so was Los Angeles with Riverside, Anaheim... added.

There is a lot of manual work after computers have created the model with the help of photos. C3 said themselves that 98% of the work is made by the computer and 2% is manual fixing. I dont know how much work that 2% is, but if you'll compare New York city in Google Earth and iOS Maps, you can see what I mean.

Watching the news where they are using Google Maps to show the yard where the suspect is hiding, so I tried the area with both Google Maps and App,e Maps on my iPad...so not getting the same image as on tv. But was surprised how bad Google Earth through their app looks compared to Apple Maps (which does have flyby in Watertown)

Here's Google Earth...

I agree. In past few weeks Google released a lot of new cities in 3D, but their quality is awful compared to Apple's. Compare New York City. The thin gap between 2 buildings gets melted together. Their cities looks more like 3D Melting Cheese City.

Google are more concentrated on the quantity rather than the quality. Quantity of companies Google acquires, the quantity of their Android OS is running on, the quantity of their services (some of which shuts down), and so on.

Apple doesn't seem to bring 3D cities that fast, but their quality is very decent, so I think it is worth the wait.

As someone that frequently uses mass transit, googles info often totally sucked. It's better to get it from the source so you are always up to date. Which is why Apple left it out.

And given the startup issues and the validation etc they need to do to get their driving info correct I hate to think how badly behind their transit might get

I use both. Had no problems with Apple Maps until last weeks, when trying to find a Walgreen's north of San Francisco. Apple Maps had me exit the 101, turn right...drive a mile, turn right, then get back on the 101, exit at the same place. Repeat. Repeat.

The Google Maps API doesn't require the app to be installed to display Google Maps data. There may be some apps that have the ability to launch a location in Google Maps if it is installed but that is not the same as using the Google Maps API inside of an app.

For me one thing is really annoying. That i need to write exactly and fully street name for searching it (for example: Gedimino prospektas) with google maps i can write Gedimino pr. and it will find.
