Upgrade memory question

Is it ok to add 2 sticks of 8gb of the same type memory to the already 4gb in my 2011, I5, 3.1 Imac ? That equals 20gb, is this a good thing ?

Yes, you can add unmatched RAM with no problems.

What does it mean – “with no problems”?
Will it “just work”? Or will it perform as good as the matched set?

Yes, it will "just work." You get a slight performance benefit from using matched RAM, but not enough to outweigh the increase in RAM.
