White palm rest on mbp

My two year old MacBook Pro started developing faintly white areas upon the palm rest a little while back. I have no idea what they might be, although they feel a little rougher than the rest of the aluminum enclosure. It cannot be cleaned off by wiping it, water, rubbing alcohol, etc. Is this simply the oils from my hand or a result of sweaty palms? Should I go to the Apple store to try and get this fixed? Has anyone else experienced something like this?

It's a lot worse than the stuff in this old image.
