I have an iPad, as does my mum. I was sitting on one side of the room, she the other. She was on her White iPad 3, me on my black. Her iPad's volume was significantly louder than mine, even when I put them next to each other.

What the heck? I have iOS6, she is still on 5.

Also, can playing them on full volume mess with the speakers?

Were you both listening to the same exact thing? Are you sure both of the volumes were matched up correctly? As far as I know, full volume can't hurt your speakers, but leaving it on full blast can't exactly be good for it, either.
