How to access hardware test mode on Mountain Lion?

Hello.

I have a mid-2010 13 inch MBP and I am curious about the built in diagnostic mode Intel based Macs have and I want to run it to test my hardware. Instructions say to shutdown the MBP, hold 'D" and turn it back on again but it just does not work for me. My MBP is running Mountain Lion, is recovery mode not present or accessed a different way or does my MBP just not have it?

The mode I am referring to hardware test mode and the directions I followed are here:

Holding down 'D' as instructed does nothing and it just boots as normal.

Any help is much appreciated.

2010 MBPs came with Snow Leopard and a disc with the Apple Hardware Test on it (usually the second applications disc... look for the AHT version number to find the disc). Put that in the drive and hold down the D key on startup.

There are firmware upgrades for some earlier Macs to run the hardware test from firmware/the internet, but not all of them were upgraded.

Make sure that your Mac has the latest EFI- and SMC-updates!

If you click on “Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery” Apple gives you a list with the newest EFI- and SMC-updates. Select your model, download and install the update!

Thanks very much for replying.

I remember installing an EFI update that was issued through software update when I was running Lion. It may be the same one that Mr Retrofire is referring to but I still cannot boot in to diagnostic mode holding 'D' so I will try the Applications DVD that came with Snow Leopard as iVoid mentioned.
