Do I still own a domain?

In January of 2011 I bought a web hosting package and registered a domain. The domain www.szolr.c.uk came with the hosting package (with 1&1). I registered www.szolr.com separately. Sometime in late 2011 I terminated the hosting package and unregistered the domain-well i stopped paying for it.

I've now changed my mind. I want www.szolr.co.uk back. And I want to buy a new hosting package. Do I still own the domain? According to WHOIS I seem to. (here) I want it back basically. How?

Regrettably I believe you do not own the domain. In your own words you said you released the domain by terminating payments for it.

You might get lucky and the domain is available. Only way to know is to try and register the domain.

According to whois, it's still registered to me. Hence I'm confused. I don't mind buying it again, but I'm not sure how to exactly...

Supposedly .co.uk domains are registered for 2 years too. So it should still be mine til January 2013.

I would go back to whomever you registered it from in the first place. That domain is definitely showing up as registered.

I believe if you've registered with 1&1, it will stay as your domain until the 2 year anniversary of you buying it.

I think "canceling" before the 2 years is up is basically just telling 1&1 not to renew it when the time comes.

You should be able to log into your 1&1 admin panel and check that the domain still exists for you.

I can't log in anymore.

It says the password's no longer valid. Needless to say I've contacted 1&1 by email. The reply says that I need to call in to sort it out basically. A bit vague, but I'll see how it goes.

If you get no luck contacting 1&1's support, as it's a .uk domain then go to Nominet directly - nominet.org.uk.

You should have received an email directly from them with access details when you first registered the domain. If not, or if it's been binned, you may be able to retrieve a login if you remember which email address you used when registering the domain (and, of course, if you still have access to that email).

If that's still no good, you can re-establish your identity with Nominet here for a small fee.

you do still own the domain even though you have cancelled it. It is still registered under your name with nominet. You will have to cancel the domain with nominet before it will be released.
