After 33 years in this industry, I have to toss in that you have to LOVE THIS, or find something else to do with your free time. It's not easy, and it's certainly not as lucrative as other professions, especially for beginners.
Another thought is that the market for Professional Design doesn't START till customers are frustrated or unsatisfied with what they can shove out themselves in MS Office, or get over the counter at Office Depot or Staples, or online at Vistaprint, or out of a WP or Web Template. They'll turn to pros when they want to look better than that and are willing to pay someone a fair price to get it.
Also consider that you'll need to be doing Web along with Print Design. That's become about 60% of my total volume, and I was a Print Designer long before PCs ever turned up in the home, on peoples desks, everywhere. I made the transition to Digital Design in the 90s and since then have had to embrace this interwebz thing... This requires a lifetime career commitment to endless learning and embracing of new technologies, techniques, and skill sets.
Last thought... many clients, and employers - esp. small business ones - will lump a vast spectrum of skill sets into "computer stuff" and expect you to do and know EVERYTHING. In the current age, Graphic Design is considered a subset of "Computer Stuff" and not it's own discrete profession. (Much to the annoyance of Programmers, Developers and IT Pros ) But the ways of handling it are to widen your skill sets (yes, SETS) at every opportunity, and have good relationships with allied professionals that you can refer to.
